Equity and inclusion statement
September 2026About this statement
We believe that a more just, equitable and inclusive world is not an aspiration that sits alongside our work – it is the point of our work. The organisations we partner with are tackling inequality, discrimination, systemic exclusion, and environmental injustice. We cannot advocate for those causes and not hold ourselves to the same standard.
Made for the World is a micro studio of two directors. We have no employees. This statement sets out our commitment to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) in how we run our studio, how we work with partners, and how we engage with the wider world.
How we run our studio
Made for the World is co-founded and co-directed by Lucy Player and Chris Wolf. We hold equal ownership, receive equal salaries, and share decision-making on an equal basis. There is no hierarchy of pay or power between us.
We work with a small, trusted network of freelance collaborators, and are committed to engaging them fairly, regardless of their background, location, or identity. We pay fairly – including ensuring that collaborators based outside the UK are paid at least the equivalent of the UK National Minimum Wage, regardless of local minimums. We also assess our collaborators through an induction process that explicitly screens for work in sectors that cause harm. Our approach to fair and ethical engagement is further detailed in our Modern Slavery Statement.
We operate a four-day week as a standing commitment – not as a perk, but as a structural choice that reflects our belief that sustainable, healthy working is non-negotiable.
How we work with partners
We work exclusively with mission-driven organisations – charities, NGOs, member networks, foundations, and social enterprises working on the world’s most pressing challenges. Many of our partners work directly with communities that face discrimination, exclusion, and injustice: on labour rights, climate justice, food sovereignty, and social mobility.
We assess every project through our Impact Compass, which holds every brief up against three conditions: is the world this organisation is working towards environmentally regenerative, socially resilient, and institutionally reformed? Social resilience – the condition that all people have the opportunity and capacity to lead engaged, meaningful and fulfilling lives – is a core filter for every project we take on.
We are committed to building accessible digital platforms. The websites we design and build target WCAG AA accessibility standards as a minimum, and we work with Digital Carbon Online to measure and minimise the environmental impact of every platform we create.
How we engage with the wider world
We actively support organisations and communities working on JEDI-related causes through our 1% for the Planet membership, directing at least 1% of annual revenue to environmental and social organisations in their network.
Both directors volunteer time outside the studio to community-led initiatives. Lucy volunteers with Incredible Edible, a grassroots community growing project. Chris sits on the Board of Directors of Community Energy Birmingham, a community-owned cooperative bringing affordable clean energy to local residents.
We are a Design Declares signatory, publicly committing to the role of design in addressing the climate and ecological emergency – a crisis that disproportionately affects the world’s most marginalised communities.
How we engage with the wider world
- We will keep this statement publicly available on our website and review it annually
- We will continue to develop our understanding of JEDI through training and engagement with our sector networks
- We will report on our JEDI actions annually in our Impact Report
