Impact Compass

The Impact Compass is a structured framework we apply to every project brief, from the first conversation through to delivery.

We developed it to ensure every project we partner on is genuinely set up to deliver the systemic impact your organisation exists to create.

The conditions for systems change

Genuine systems change requires a precise definition of what you’re working towards – clear enough to guide every decision and measure every outcome.

Our definition is grounded in the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Future-Fit Business Benchmark, and describes three conditions:

Environmental regeneration

Nature is not subject to systematic increases in societal extraction, pollution, or degradation – whether that’s fossil carbon, deforestation, or the slow erosion of ecosystems that sustain all life.

Social resilience

All people have the opportunity and capacity to lead engaged, meaningful and fulfilling lives that protect the health of both communities and ecosystems.

Institutional reform

All global structures, institutions and governance systems actively drive the pursuit of an inclusive, planet-positive economy.

Impact compass

With the destination defined, we ask four questions that get to the heart of what your website is actually here to do.

Each question is designed to uncover what real-world change we’re aiming to bring about, what role the website can credibly play, and how we’ll know it’s working.

Impact

What real-world change are we trying to achieve?

We start by defining the change your organisation exists to create. The audiences you need to reach, the behaviours you want to shift, and the outcomes that would tell you something has genuinely changed. Expressed as a single, plain-English statement specific enough to guide every decision that follows.
Contribution

How can the website credibly help bring that change about?

With the impact defined, we turn to the website’s role. What can this platform realistically do to reach those audiences and support those shifts? Not everything a website can do is worth doing. This compass point is about focus – identifying the most credible and meaningful ways the site can contribute, within honest boundaries.
Conditions

What needs to be true for the website to succeed?

Every project has blockers and enablers – whether that’s organisational realities, content gaps, technical constraints or capacity questions. This compass point surfaces them early, so nothing derails the work later. And accessibility and sustainability are considered here as non-negotiables.
Outcomes

How will we know the website is doing its job?

We distinguish between outputs (what the website produces), outcomes (what changes in behaviour or capability as a result), and impact (the real-world difference that creates). Outcome and impact measurement is notoriously difficult — often playing out over longer timeframes than any web project can track alone. But understanding that distinction matters. We work with our partners to ensure measurement is considered and built in from the start, so that as evidence emerges over time, there’s a framework in place to capture it.
