Environmental policy

September 2026

Our commitment

Made for the World is a certified B Corporation and a member of 1% for the Planet. We work exclusively with organisations trying to create a more environmentally regenerative, socially resilient, and institutionally reformed world. It would be inconsistent to advocate for that kind of change and not hold ourselves to the same standard.

This policy sets out how we manage our environmental impact as a business and the commitments we make to keep improving.

Climate

We are committed to reducing our contribution to climate change in line with the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C. In practice, this means:

  • Measuring our greenhouse gas emissions annually using the SME Climate Hub carbon calculator (aligned with the GHG Protocol) and publishing the results in our annual Impact Report
  • Setting a year-on-year emissions reduction target and tracking our progress against it
  • Avoiding air travel for business purposes and using public transport for all UK travel
  • Directing at least 1% of annual revenue to environmental organisations through our 1% for the Planet membership

Our Climate Action Plan, which sets out our specific reduction targets and how we will resource them, is also available on our website.

Digital footprint

Our primary environmental impact as a digital studio comes through the websites we design and build, and through the digital tools we use every day. We are committed to:

  • Hosting all websites on Krystal, the first B Corp-certified web host, powered by 100% renewable energy
  • Measuring the carbon impact of the websites we work on with Digital Carbon Online, and building carbon verification into every project proposal as standard
  • Working towards carbon-neutral ratings across our full client portfolio
  • Choosing cloud services and software tools with strong environmental credentials where a genuine alternative exists
  • Reviewing our software subscriptions regularly so we don’t retain services we no longer need
  • Using AI tools thoughtfully. AI carries a higher energy cost than conventional computing, so our use of it is governed by our AI Policy. Our default tool, GreenPT, is chosen specifically for its environmental credentials

Procurement

We consider environmental and ethical credentials as part of every supplier decision. Specifically:

  • We prefer to work with B Corps, or suppliers with equivalent verified credentials, where a genuine alternative exists
  • We choose green or renewable-energy providers wherever feasible – our hosting, mobile, and email providers are all chosen on this basis
  • We maintain a Supplier Log documenting how each supplier was assessed against environmental and ethical criteria
  • We recognise that some tools (such as design and productivity software) have limited ethical alternatives in the market; in these cases we document our assessment and monitor for improvements

Ways of working

The way we run the studio is itself an environmental choice. We are committed to:

  • Operating as a fully remote, home-based studio, eliminating daily commuting and office energy use
  • Working a four-day week, reducing resource consumption as a structural commitment rather than a productivity measure
  • Using co-working spaces that share our values when we work outside our home offices, specifically B Corp certified and independently owned venues
  • Choosing video calls over in-person travel wherever practical

Equipment

The equipment we use is limited, and we make it last. When we do need to replace or dispose of hardware, we do it responsibly:

  • We extend the working life of our hardware for as long as it remains fit for purpose, avoiding unnecessary replacement
  • When equipment does need replacing, we consider refurbished hardware as a first option before buying new – refurbished devices can reduce emissions by up to 90% compared with new manufacture
  • Where buying new is necessary, we consider the environmental credentials of the manufacturer
  • We dispose of old equipment responsibly through established e-waste channels

Responsibility

Environmental responsibility sits with both directors – Lucy Player and Chris Wolf. All procurement decisions, supplier choices, and operational commitments are made jointly. Environmental performance is reviewed annually as part of our board meeting and reported publicly in our annual Impact Report.
